Jay ReatardMemphis-based garage rocker Jay Reatard has been plying his trade since his teenage years, and following a slew of increasingly lauded releases-- including 2006's Blood Visions-- he signed to high-profile indie label Matador Records. Known also for his work in the Reatards and the Lost Sounds, Reatard records and tours at a relentless pace, but his work doesn't suffer for it: The best of Jay Reatard's songs teem with electric energy and abound in hooks that nestle in your head for days. |

Blitzen TrapperBlitzen Trapper are an experimental folk troupe based in Portland, Oregon, who have self-released three albums in the past four years, gaining critical praise with their last effort, Wild Mountain Nation, just after signing with Seattle-based Sub Pop records. Their latest album blends elements of country, folk, glam, and some sci-fi studio trickery into a finished product of bizarre and energetic rock. |

The Hold SteadyBorn from the ashes of beloved cult act Lifter Puller and anchored by the exuberant storytelling antics of frontman Craig Finn, Brooklyn's the Hold Steady craft riff-rock that isn't afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve. Finn's charismatic characters, such as those found on 2006's Boys and Girls in America, inhabit dive bars strewn with empty beer bottles and messy apartments still reeling from last night's party; don't be surprised if you're reminded of someone you know. The quintet is rounded out by lead guitarist Tad Kubler, bassist Galen Polivka, drummer Bobby Drake, and keyboardist Franz Nicolay. |

The Cool KidsChicago hip hop duo the Cool Kids have managed to create their own label, write, produce and record all their own music, and land an opening bill on a sold-out M.I.A. tour-- all before their 25th birthdays. Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks met while attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and have teamed up with local DJ duo Flosstradamus, who helped springboard them to popular acclaim. The Kids lack a proper full-length release, but have two EPs under their belts, and an album is forthcoming this year on Chocolate Industries. |

BattlesThe four highly accomplished players who comprise Battles certainly have the technical chops, but they merge that virtuosity with an experimental playfulness that results in a sound apt to provoke brain and body alike. Powerhouse drummer John Stanier and multi-instrumentalists Tyondai Braxton, Ian Williams, and Dave Konopka came together in New York City in 2003. After several well-received EPs, they unleashed debut full-length Mirrored upon the world in 2007. |

LCD SoundsystemLCD Soundsystem is the musical moniker of producer James Murphy, co-founder of the dance-punk label DFA Records. Murphy gained notoriety in the early 2000s with his underground dance hit "Losing My Edge" and was later nominated for two Grammys for "Daft Punk is Playing at My House", the lead single from LCD Soundsystem's self-titled debut album. In the past two years, he has released an mix in partnership with Nike, and a critically-lauded sophomore album, Sound of Silver, in which he continued to build on his distinctive sound that incorporates elements of disco, punk, funk, and house music. |

Dinosaur Jr.Known for their towering amps and intimidatingly loud live shows, Dinosaur Jr. joined bands like Sonic Youth and Pixies in helping define the American indie/college rock sound of the 1980s, setting the cogs in motion for the alternative rock explosion of the following decade. The trio's original lineup, comprised of singer/guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph, parted acrimoniously before the onset of the 90s, but reunited in the mid-2000s. Following reunion tours, Dinosaur Jr. released Beyond in 2007, an album every bit as formidable as the classics from the trio's heyday. |
